If you've been doing some online shopping lately to spruce up your front porch, chances are you've come across those shops pushing UV machine-printed doormats. You'd think those machine-made ones would be the bomb compared to hand-painted doormats. But guess what? We decided to put both to the test, and the results will blow your mind!
I've learned a lot over these last 14 years about how to make a fun and functional home good. I want to share with you how making over 30,000 Doormats by hand has made Damn Good Doormats the best damn doormats that you can buy. Better than anything a machine can do any day. Truly Art you can wipe your feet on!
Made from all-natural, sustainable coconut coir fibers, our rectangular medium-pile doormats in sizes from a skinny 6”x30” up to double wide 24”x60” are earth friendly and built to last. I'm always looking for new ways to improve my offerings to my fans. I'm all for progress, and if I can offer my fans a better product at a lower price, that I physically don’t have to make with my own two hands, I am 100% on board with that.
UV machine-printed doormats are the newest technology taking the doormat world by storm. A giant laser printer prints the ink directly on the rough, coconut coir surface. It sounds great, right? Machines do everything better; industrial, machine-made goods MUST be more durable than handmade products. I'll show you exactly how human-made beats the machines this time and why a hand-painted Damn Good Doormat is still the best damn door mat you can buy.
I designed my spooky oracle board doormat for Halloween in 2012. For this test, I painted one myself and ordered an exact copy from a UV machine printing company. The UV mat looks excellent right out of the package. I'm not gonna lie. I was impressed! My carpal tunnel heaved a tentative sigh of relief that I may not have to keep moving 70 tons of doormats a year by myself. But let's see what happens as these doormats are put to a real-world test.
We did a real-life showdown, pitting a UV machine-printed doormat against our trusty hand-painted mat. After 14 years & over 30,000 mats in the doormat biz (I, Spoon, invented the handmade doormat genre!), we have formulated some A+++ techniques for hand painting doormats. We got an exact copy of our awesome Oracle Board doormat and slapped one at the front door while the other guarded the back entrance. Both spots were sheltered, so no direct sun or rain hit 'em. We gave both mats a run for their money, using both doors every single day for a solid four months. There's just the two of us in our house, plus our adorable spokesdogs, Tammy Sandwiches and Werner Hertzdog. I conscientiously wiped my feet on both rugs every day equally. I wasn't going for any crazy Samsonite gorilla smashing suitcase action job, just the average wear and tear of a small family.
And look where we got on Day 2. The UV-printed doormat is a mess! It's unbelievable how poorly the UV printing is standing up. The hand-painted doormat still looks perfect. It's trapping dirt at the door, not shedding, and the painted image is crisp and clear as the day I painted it.
Fast forward to 10 days of use. After only 10 days, the UV-printed doormat is almost illegible.
Now see how it fares at one month!
Now here's where it gets crazy - the UV machine-printed doormat practically faded before our eyes, while the hand-painted beauty still looks fresh as ever. Talk about a knockout win for the hand-painted crew!
Check out this recent review from a happy return customer NINE years later! "I bought a "House of Learned Doctors" doormat from this company in 2014, and it just now needs replacing. It says a lot about the quality of your materials." -Elizabeth S.
Saleswise, it's probably not smart to make a seasonal home decor product that can last nine years, but that's how we roll! It's a good thing that Damn Good Doormats also make unforgettable gifts.
